Fit with diabetes - New seal of approval for safe training at the gym

Bar ohne Namen

The German Diabetes Association DDG/ AG Diabetes, Sport & Bewegung (Sport & Exercise) has developed a new seal of approval in cooperation with diabetesDE, the IST University of Applied Sciences for Management and the Experten Allianz für Gesundheit e.V., which is intended to enable people with diabetes to train safely in fitness and health centres in Germany.

Around 9 million people in Germany live with diabetes. Epidemiologists expect the number of diabetes cases to rise to around 12 million by 2040. Healthcare costs amount to around 21 billion euros per year (including concomitant diseases of diabetes).

Regular physical activity optimises cardiometabolic and musculoskeletal health and improves cognitive and psychosocial functions. People with diabetes in particular benefit from this.

To ensure that exercise can be carried out safely, diabetes-related concomitant and secondary diseases must be taken into account when selecting an exercise programme. In addition, numerous factors must be taken into account to avoid metabolic imbalances during and after exercise - depending on the medication being used.

With their innovative exercise concepts, fitness and health studios offer an ideal platform for health-orientated strength, endurance, flexibility and coordination training for people with diabetes.

Unfortunately, it is currently not possible for either those affected or specialist staff to orientate themselves in terms of quality with regard to the increasing range of offers on the health and fitness market.

"Transparency, quality and the greatest possible safety are the important pillars of our Fit mit Diabetes ('Fit with Diabetes') seal of approval," emphasises Dr Stephan Kress, Chairman of AG Diabetes, Sport und Bewegung of DDG.

Emergency management, medical care and diabetes-specific qualification

The requirements for the Fit mit Diabetes seal of approval are, in addition to infrastructural and equipment requirements of the fitness and health studios, optimised emergency management, medical supervision of the fitness and health studios and, in particular, diabetes-specific qualification of the training providers.

The catalogue of criteria and the training curriculum have been developed by doctors and sports scientists from the AG Diabetes, Sport und Bewegung. The project is scientifically supported by the Experten Allianz für Gesundheit e.V., an organisation representing the interests of fitness, training and health providers, and the IST University of Applied Sciences for Management in Düsseldorf. The IST University of Applied Sciences also qualifies auditors who carry out the regularly required external audits in the studios.

Prof Dr Christian Brinkmann, a specialist in diabetes and exercise therapy at the IST University of Applied Sciences, is convinced that "this unique cooperation between diabetologists, sports scientists and training providers will improve the quality of training opportunities for people with diabetes".

The renowned sports scientist and scientific director of the Research Institute for Training in Prevention (FIT-Prävention), Prof Dr Ingo Froböse, is also enthusiastic about the opportunities and possibilities of the seal of approval. "The seal offers certified training centres the opportunity to present themselves as training providers with health expertise, but also to participate in scientific research projects."

The first public presentation of the Fit mit Diabetes seal of approval will take place on 11 April 2024 from 12:00 - 12:45 at the FIBO Meeting Point Health (Hall 8 B32).
